Adult day care center fills need

SUGAR GROVE—Genesis Adult Day Care Center owner Charlene Johnson and her partner Maria Uy said they chose Sugar Grove for their new facility because they felt the area was underserved, with the closest adult day care centers in Batavia, Geneva and Aurora.
The new center is located in the former Robert Allen Beauty Salon space, across the street from Kaneland John Shields Elementary School.
Johnson, whose background is in real estate, said she has been a caregiver in her family for years, helping care for her grandmother and great-uncle, and more recently, her mother after she had a stroke.
Uy has a nursing degree and a license in California and Indiana.
According to Johnson, the purpose of the center will be to help older clients maintain their social, mental, physical and emotional wellbeing in a community-based setting.
“We want to keep them out of a nursing home as long as possible,†she said.
If an older person is at home for any length of time due to a medical issue, they can begin to regress, Johnson said. Even if a family member thinks they can provide the care at home, they can often use some help.
Daily activities at the center will include crafts, games, music, outings and birthday celebrations. Snacks and lunch are provided. Clients may make appointments with a licensed beautician for hair-styling, perms and hair-cuts.
A local minister, the Rev. Dr. James Harper of the Grace Fellowship Church in Maple Park, will hold a Bible study session one day a week. Limited medical care, such as blood pressure monitoring and assistance with medication, will be provided.
Johnson said that the center will be able to accept clients in the early stages of Alzheimers. Private payment is accepted for the daily rate of $75 per day, or $85 per day with transportation within a 10-mile radius. She said that potential clients should check with their insurance companies to determine if adult day care services are covered.
Clients may participate in the program from one to five days a week, depending on their needs and the needs of their families.
“It’s a very nice facility,†Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said.
Michels said that as one’s parents get older, people tend to worry about them as much or more than they do about their own children.
“Keeping them involved provides a nice peace of mind for kids of older parents,†he said. “It’s a great feature to have in town.â€
