ELBURN—A new business in Elburn offers authentic Mexican food for carryout and delivery.

Chico’s Tacos is located on the corner of Route 47 and Main Street Road, next to Blackberry Inn. The business occupies the former site of Hey Weenie.

Owner Juanita Lopez runs the business with her husband, Felipe, and son, Alex. A resident of DeKalb, she is an avid, lifelong cook.

“I was raised by my grandmother, who was blind, so I was always by her side, cooking, and it became a passion,” Lopez said.

Everything at Chico’s Tacos is homemade from scratch from her own recipes, she said.

Prices range from $1.60 for a taco to $6 for a burrito. Tostadas cost $2.25 and quesadillas are priced from $2 to $2.25.

A house specialty are the tortas, Mexican sandwiches on round bread slices, which cost $5.75 each and feature beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and avocado spread, with a choice of meat—ham, steak, marinated pork, beef, chicken or tongue.

Desserts also are available, including flan, gelatina de leche, cheesecake and chocolate cake, priced from $2.50 to $3.00.

Chico’s Tacos side orders range from nachos to tamales to beans and rice.

Even the horchata—a sweet rice drink—is made fresh.

“We don’t sell the packaged stuff,” Lopez said.
