KANELAND—Lady Knights senior Hayley Guyton is set to move from trying to best Barbs and Foxes to getting the upper hand on Bears and Braves.
Such is life in the Missouri Valley Conference circuit of women’s golf, soon to be joined by Guyton.
The Sugar Grove resident signed a letter of intent this month to compete for Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. in the fall.

“I know I’m the type of person to get homesick and I still have a lot of friends and family down there,” Guyton said. “I know people going to school in Bloomington, Ill., so it just seemed like the perfect fit. It’s a home away from home and will be more comfortable.”
Head womens’ coach Darby Sligh is eager for what Guyton can bring to Normal.
“We’re incredibly excited to have her. She brings a wealth of experience, and it’s always nice to bring a little local flair to our golf program,” she said.
Guyton, who competed on the Kaneland boys squad under coach Mark Meyer, is ready for adjustments inherent with playing on the girls circuit.
“It’ll be different practicing with the girls all the time. It’s a great group of girls and I’m really excited to play with them,” Guyton said.
Guyton brings the sixth-lowest IHSA Statetournament score of 145, acheived as a junior when she finished second overall, and an eighth-place Class AA finish this past fall.
“I need to be more consistent and hit the ball further, because I want to travel my freshman year, I think that’d be really great. It’ll all help me in dealing with the college pressure,” Guyton said.
In the meantime, Guyton is taking a break from the links aside from the occasional lesson and weightlifting.
It’s a welcome calm leading to the next phase of Guyton’s golf story.
