Solheim Cup spectators can look forward to an extra day to watch teams practice before the tournament begins this summer at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.

Monday is typically a travel day for professional golfers. However, with no tournaments scheduled for the previous week, players will begin arriving on Saturday and Sunday, leaving Monday open for an extra day on the course.

The Solheim Cup, a prestigious international team event in women’s professional golf, features the best female players in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in the United States against the top European-born players in the Ladies European tour (LET).

The event and its festivities will run from Monday, Aug. 17, through Sunday, Aug. 23.

According to Solheim Cup 2009 sales director Marcus Fischer, Monday will be a bonus day for fans to enjoy the course, take pictures and obtain autographs before the tournament begins.

Weekly grounds tickets cost $125 and include the four practice days, admission to the opening ceremony on Thursday afternoon, the three official days of competition and the closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

Currently, there are no daily tickets being sold. However, Fischer said the weekly tickets can be shared with friends or family members.

Sugar Grove trustee Bob Bohler, the village’s liaison to the Solheim Cup organization, said preparations are well under way for the tournament. He said the Kane County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police will assist with traffic control during the event.

Ladies Professional Golf Association member and U.S.A. Solheim Cup team captain Beth Daniel was in Chicago at the end of February for the 26th Annual Chicago Golf Show. She took the opportunity to attend a Chicago Blackhawk’s hockey game, where she appeared on ice for the Shoot the Puck Competition. The Blackhawks gave Daniel a jersey with her name and ‘09 on the back.

“It was the first time she had a hockey stick in her hand,” Fischer said.
