Erling ‘Erl’ Pederson

Erling “Erl” Pedersen, 90, beloved husband of Christine (nee Carsten) of 35 years, passed away after a courageous battle, at home on Nov. 4, 2011.

Loving and devoted father of Rod (RaeAnn) and Glenn (Sherri); cherished grandfather to 10, Deanne, Glenn (Lisa), Holly (Mark), Dana (Kevin), Michael (Nicole), Chad (Nicole), Derek, Andrew, Brian and Shannon; great-grandfather to Kevin, Morgan, Brittney, Katelyn, Andrew, Courtney, Alyssa, and Ava. Erl is also survived by his dear sister, Lilly and family.

Erl was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Christine; father-in-law, Cliff; and brother-in-law, Paul.

Erl emigrated from Denmark to Chicago in 1929, spending his youth in the Humboldt Park area, where he would later graduate from Lane Tech High School. Erl also spent time as a baseball player for the Chicago Cubs farm team in Appleton, Wis. A veteran of the D-Day invasion of World War II, Erl was a proud American. Active in his community, Erl was a respected trustee of Maple Park and in Carol Stream, Ill., where he and Chris lived for 14 years. In addition, he was an elected alderman of West Chicago while they lived there for 12 years.

He will be dearly missed by extended family and friends. Funeral services will be on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, with Rev. Rob Kinnear officiating.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church.
