Chiefs’ mens hoops nabs honors

Waubonsee Community College’s men’s basketball team had four players honored recently by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC). David Johnson and Josh Lawrence were both named to the All-ISCC First Team, while Dione Young and Jonathan Shields were each selected to the All-ISCC Second Team.

Johnson, a 6’1” sophomore guard, averaged 12.9 points-per-game in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play. A graduate of Chicago’s International Charter School-Longwood, Johnson dished out 2.5 assists and recorded 25 steals.

Lawrence, a 6’4” sophomore forward from Chicago’s Washington High School, tallied 11.2 points and pulled down 4.8 rebounds per contest in ISCC action. The left-hander also averaged 2.3 steals in 13 conference games.

Young, a 6’5” sophomore center, booked 9.3 points and pulled down 3.9 rebounds. The graduate of Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisc., connected on 56 percent (49 of 87) of his shots from the floor during the ISCC schedule.

Shields, a 6’1” sophomore guard from Chicago’s Washington High School, registered 9.2 point-per-game while handing out 35 assists. A consistent long-range threat, Shields made 18 shots from beyond the arc and hit 72 percent of his attempts at the foul line.

Waubonsee finished the season 23-9 overall and placed second in the ISCC. The Chiefs lost in the semi-finals of the Region IV Division II District B Tournament to the eventual champion Morton College on March 1.
