ELBURN—An Aurora woman sentenced to seven years in prison for her involvement in a fatal, multi-car crash that occurred at Route 47 and Smith Road on May 23, 2009, filed a motion on Feb. 15 to reduce her sentence.

Alia Bernard, 27, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony aggrevated DUI on Dec. 9, 2011, and was sentenced on Feb. 8 to seven years on each count, and her sentence will be served concurrently. She must serve at least 85 percent of the seven-year sentence. Associate Judge Anderson will hear the motion on March 22 at 9 a.m.

The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m., seconds after records show that Bernard sent a text message. Her car crashed into three southbound vehicles stopped behind a car turning onto Smith Road from Route 47, creating a chain reaction that pushed the third car into the path of oncoming motorcycles. The crash killed Wade Thomas, 44, and his wife Denise, 45, of St. Charles. Five other people were injured in the crash.
