ELBURN—The Kane County Coroner’s Office last week ruled that the New Year’s Day death of an Elburn man was self-inflicted.

Robert J. O’Donnell, 50, of the 1200 block of Wise St., died as the result of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Jan. 1. According to an Elburn Police Department press release, the ruling was the result of a complete Police Department investigation combined with the results of toxicology tests and evidence found and recovered at the scene.

O’Donnell’s body was discovered in his master bedroom by Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters after they extinguished a fire in his home. O’Donnell was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner’s office, with the time of death at approximately 2:30 p.m.

O’Donnell’s wife was not home at the time of the fire.
