Waubonsee Community College student Sofia Zafar of Sugar Grove has been chosen to represent the college on the Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Team.

The team is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society of two-year colleges. The team is comprised of two students from each of the state’s community colleges who are selected based on academic performance and service to their colleges and communities.

It was their outstanding achievement in these same two areas that led Waubonsee to award Zafar a Gustafson Scholarship, which is a two-year full-tuition scholarships awarded annually to high-achieving students from area high schools.

While maintaining a 3.9 GPA in her nursing coursework, Zafar has gotten some valuable work experience as a transporter and unit secretary at Provena Mercy Medical Center.

She has also spent time volunteering at local nursing homes. Zafar has served as treasurer of the Student Senate and currently is the president of the school’s African Cultural Alliance, but her most high-profile student leadership position has been her current role as the college’s student trustee. In this role, her main responsibility is to represent the student body on the board.
