SUGAR GROVE—Mike and Vicki Morkert of Aurora have taken their mobile coffee shop, Java Plus, and translated its portable concept into their first brick and mortar store located in the Sugar Grove Library. Java Plus will feature traditional continental breakfast items and highlight semi-local businesses such as Coffeecake Connection in West Chicago, Ill., Dave’s Coffee Cake in Rock Falls, Ill. and Jake’s Bagels out of Aurora.

“The Java Plus mobile shop has a great following, so we couldn’t discontinue that operation. Plus, we have six employees,” said shop owner Mike.

The couple’s succesful mobile coffee shop has been seen about the Kane County area for the last seven years; nearing retirement, Mike (a music teacher in School District 131) decided he wanted to manage a project that eventually could become a franchise.

“We see coffee shops in book stores all over the country,” he said, “but not too many in libraries. Encouraging the community to visit their local library and stay a while at our coffee shop is what we have in mind.”

Touting their own brand of coffee, Java Plus has 10 regular blends and over 50 flavored coffees available in whole bean and ground varieties. Vicki is not only an office manager at Aurora Sign Company in Aurora but a tea expert. Highlighting the loose teas of companies like Adadgio and Octavia Teas, Java Plus will have a favorite for every palate, no matter what your preference for a hot beverage.

“We pride ourselves in the quality of our product,” Mike said of the couple’s partnership with The Chicago Coffee Roastery. “By far, our best seller is the ‘Jamaican Me Crazy’ roast.”

There is a sincere interest not only in selling coffee and tea, but a spark in both Mike and Vicki’s eyes as they excitedly prepare their space. The decor is that of your typical coffee shop, but it’s the feeling of the space that makes someone want to sit down and stay awhile.

“The Sugar Grove Library Board has been amazing,” Mike said. “I think we are a great match, and we look forward to opening (the Java Plus shop) in early June.”
