Phyllis E. LaMonica

Phyllis E. LaMonica, 98 of Elburn, passed from this life to eternal life on July 15, 2013, at her home.

Phyllis was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Dr. Frederick and Odessa (Hicks) Causey.

Phyllis grew up in Peoria, where she graduated with the class of 1933 from the Academy of Our Lady. She went on to attend Wright Jr. College in Chicago, where she studied physical education. During one of her shifts as a life guard at the college pool, a young gentleman by the name of Philip LaMonica came in for a swim. Phyllis knew right at that moment he was the man of her dreams.

On July 10, 1937, they were united in marriage at the Presentation Catholic Church, Chicago.

Phyllis worked at Sears & Roebuck Company and Brach’s Candies, but the love of her life was her husband, her home and family. A spirited woman who gave herself to life completely, she remained undaunted when her son John was born with Praeder-Willi Syndrome. Throwing herself into his life and the lives of others, she used her education and knowledge of swimming to help at the school where John attended, and she made their home a special place to meet his needs.

Phyllis, Philip and their four children made their home in Chicago all of their lives until 1990, when Philip and Phyllis moved to Elburn. In 1996 Phyllis lost, Philip, the love of her life.

She was a longtime member of St. Gall’s Altar Society.

Phyllis loved spending time working on arts and crafts of any kind. She especially enjoyed needle point and painting figurines. She also enjoyed playing the organ for her own enjoyment and passed many hours that way.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Thomas) Trulis of Batavia; son, Carl (Linda) LaMonica of Elmwood Park, Ill.; six grandchildren, Thomas Trulis, Michael Trulis, Michael (Roxanne) LaMonica, Michelle (Kevin) O’Bryan, Philip Anthony (Janel) LaMonica and Carl (Elizabeth) LaMonica Jr.; great-grandchildren, Domonic LaMonica, Patrick LaMonica, Cooper O’Bryan, Micaela O’Bryan, Luke LaMonica, Amalie LaMonica, Daniel LaMonica, Gabriel LaMonica and Jude LaMonica; her sister, Drucilla Norris of Sterling, Ill., and her brother, Gordon Causey of Falls Church, Va.; and many nieces and nephews and a family of friends in Chicago, and the Elburn area.

She now joins her beloved husband, Philip LaMonica; her sons, John LaMonica and Philip LaMonica, Jr.; her brother, Laun Causey; sisters-in-law, Annabelle Causey and Rose Nixon; and a brother-in-law, Robert Nixon.

Visitation will take place Friday, July 19, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church, 120 W. Shannon St., Elburn. A funeral mass celebrating her faith will begin at 10 a.m. at the church, with Fr. Tim Seigel celebrating. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Hillside, Ill., at 1 p.m.
