Charles L. Nelson, 70, of DeKalb, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Bethany Health Care and Rehabilitation in DeKalb.

Charles was born June 12, 1943, in Aurora, the eldest child of Arthur and Erma Irene (Chapman) Nelson.

Charles, his brother, Gary, and their sister, Karol, spent their early years in Maple Park and Kaneville, where they attended Kaneland schools. Charles graduated from Kaneland High School in 1961.

Charles farmed on the family farm in Troxel from 1961 to 1985. He enjoyed gardening and raising vegetables for himself, family and friends. He also enjoyed the family gatherings and rarely missed one. One of his most interesting activities was scuba diving. He was a member of the Aqua Masters Dive Club in Aurora for several years. He became a Divemaster and traveled to Lake Superior, Fla. and Raton, Mexico. He also participated in the Fox Valley Canoe Race for many years. After retiring from farming, he traveled the rural Sycamore area as a delivery driver for the Daily Chronicle. During this time, he met many people with whom he became friends.

He is survived by his sister, Karol (Mike Mihm) Nelson of Sycamore; brother, Gary (Marie) Nelson of Sheridan, Ill.; three nephews, Bryan Nelson (Carah Kahle) of Earlville, Ill., Chris (Diane) Homan of Batavia and Jon (Kelli) Homan of Oswego, Ill.; and his great niece, Samantha Homan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Nelson and Erma Irene Nelson Stearns.

A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb. Visitation will precede the memorial, from 4 to 7 p.m. Private burial will take place at River Hills Cemetery, Batavia.
