Christopher Aaron Saumell

Christopher Aaron Saumell, 27, of Aurora, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.

He was born May 23, 1986, the son of Katherine (Smith) Saumell and Damon Saumell.

Christopher spent his childhood surrounded by a large, loving family that helped mold him into the loving man he became.

Christopher attended high school at Marmion Academy and graduated in 2005. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., where he majored in mathematics and philosophy. He graduated with the class of 2009. While at Augustana, he was an active brother in the Omicron Sigma Omicron fraternity.

As a freshman at Augustana, Christopher met his wife-to-be, Clare Webster. After years of being “attached at the hip,” they married in October of 2010. A year and a half later, in April of 2012, they welcomed their son, Nicholas Augustine, into the world.

Christopher was well known for his love of philosophical debate, his dry sense of humor and his unconditional generosity. It was his tendency to give as much as he could that allowed him to touch the lives of literally hundreds of people throughout his 27 years. He was a patient teacher, whether he was teaching someone how to drive a tractor or tutoring them in advanced algebra. He never missed an opportunity to debate philosophy or politics, and he particularly loved to win bets with his uncanny knowledge of trivia.

Since his childhood, his large family imparted upon him a wide range of skills and talents, and of these, he particularly enjoyed sharpening knives, shooting rifles and fishing. He always attributed his love for animals to his mother, who made sure he grew up knowing how to ride a horse. He also loved German Shepherds, and always had a special place in his heart for his childhood canine best friend, Wolf.

Christopher is survived by his wife, Clare; his 18-month-old son, Nicholas; his brother, Michael; his parents, Kathy Saumell and Damon Saumell; his grandparents, Janice and Robert Smith; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial has been established in his name to benefit his son’s education. Checks may be made to the “Christopher Aaron Saumell Memorial” and mailed in care of the Saumell family at P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
