Patricia L. Sanderson

Patricia L. Sanderson, 62, of Earlville, Ill., passed away suddenly at Mendota Community Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009.

Patricia was born on October 19, 1946 in Chicago, the daughter of James B. and Barbara A. (Bailey) Sanderson.

Pat grew up in Wasco, and attended Wasco Grade school. After graduating from St. Charles High School with the class of 1962, Pat furthered her education on a scholarship to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Shortly after, she moved to Heidelberg, Germany, and worked for the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Office. Later, she returned to St. Charles, and worked for local lawyers before dedicating 17 years working for the State of Illinois. Upon her retirement she volunteered for the COPD Foundation that she helped establish.

Pat was always moving and always doing, especially when it came to winter activities such as cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sledding and more. Summers were full of adventure and filled to capacity with activities like rafting. She was also known for her peculiar (some say “twisted”) sense of humor that balanced out the graciousness, sincerity and generosity that spoke volumes of her spirit.

In her retirement, Pat saw a need for support groups for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She was involved in the very early stages of the COPD Foundation and has spent countless hours on the call line, letting others know they are not alone in their struggles.

She now leaves her mother, Barbara, of Earlville; two sisters, Jane Sandison and Maureen (Gary) Ayala, both of Earlville; three nieces, two nephews, six great-nieces, one great-nephew, and a family of friends.

She now joins her father, James, who preceded her in death.

A memorial visitation was held Friday, Aug. 28, and a memorial service celebrating her life followed at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn.

A memorial will be established in Patricia’s name to benefit the COPD Foundation. Memorials checks may be made to the COPD FOUNDATION and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119. Tributes and memories may also be forwarded to the family at the same address, or through her obituary at
