Vera Arlene Long

Vera Arlene Long, 85, of St. Charles, formerly of Yorkville and Kaneville, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the home of her daughter in St. Charles.

She was born March 22, 1924, in Aurora, the daughter of Herman A. and Alma L. (Merkel) Henne. She lived with her parents and brother Arnold on farms in Batavia, Yorkville, Sugar Grove and Kaneville.

After graduating from Kaneville High School in 1942, she worked in Aurora, until her marriage to Harold LeRoy Long on May 12, 1945. They established their home on a farm near Kaneville. Harold died in an accident in March, 1956.

Vera worked as a secretary in the administrative offices of the Kaneland School District from 1961 until her retirement in 1990. She moved to Yorkville in December of 1992, where she continued to enjoy such hobbies as flower gardening and crocheting. Vera also enjoyed traveling, both day trips and longer tours. She was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Yorkville, baptized April 20, 1924, and confirmed March 21, 1937. She served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the WELCA Ruth Circle, and was active on several committees within the church.

Vera is survived by four children, Douglas (Jean) Long of Galesburg, Ill., Rebecca Aldrich of St. Charles, Gerald (Diane) Long of Kaneville, and Gary (Linda) Long of Elburn; seven grandchildren, Capt. Jeffrey Long of Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., David Long of Galesburg, Ill., Elizabeth and Katherine Aldrich of St. Charles, Brett and Ashley Long of Kaneville, and Travis Long of Elburn.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents, her paternal and maternal grandparents, her infant son David, and her brother.

Visitation was Oct. 21, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St. , Elburn. Her funeral service will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Yorkville at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, with interment following at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery .
