WCC Menâ€™s, Womenâ€™s Tourney action
Waubonsee Community Collegeâ€™s (WCC) menâ€™s and womenâ€™s basketball teams got off to a good start in their Region IV Division II postseason tournaments.
The Chiefs (22-8), a No. 2 seed, held down No. 7 College of Lake County (CLC) on Thursday by a final of 75-64. Held in Sugar Grove and part of the Division II District B tourney, the Chiefs got 25 points from sophomore Nigel Jackson and 11 points each from Danny Fernandez and Markus Cocroft.
WCC had a 32-30 lead at halftime and outscored CLC 43-34 in the second half to extend the lead.
WCC then played third-seeded Prairie State on Sunday at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby in the semis and came away with a 62-55 win thanks to 13 points from Fernandez.
The Cheifs improved to 23-8 and face Moraine Valley CC in the Region IV title game at IVCC at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the 5th-seeded Lady Chiefs (15-17) pulled a minor upset over Elgin Community College on Thursday in Elgin by a 63-59 final.
The District K matchup featured WCC making five of six foul shots in the final minute. Alicia Edwards led the way with 17 points, and that led to the Lady Chiefs facing top seed IVCC on Saturday and ending their season with a 83-59 loss.
