Girls track tunes up for sectional challenge

With Saturday’s Class AA girls track sectional in Ottawa, the Lady Knights are putting themselves in position for some huge efforts, judging by the past week.
Tuesday had KHS participate in a 13-team sectional prep meet in Oregon, and Friday had the Lady Knights travel to Batavia for the second annual Western Sun Conference meet.
The Oregon meet did not have team scores kept. Meanwhile, in WSC territory, Kaneland finished fourth for the second straight year with 63.5 points.
At the home of the Hawks, Kaneland saw Alyssa Galvan finish third in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Lauren Whittaker flung the discus for a total of 90-2 1/2, good for third.
Danni Anderson finished third in the long jump at 14 feet. Kelli Patterson took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 29-11.
Kaneland had two top finishers in the pole vault: Jordan Pinkston in second (9-6) and Sara Wallace in fifth (9-0).
The 3200 meter relay foursome finished first (10:13.78). Lindsay Gierke, looking for a repeat trip to State, finished first in the 100m hurdles (15.02), with Pinkston finishing third (17.67).
Senior Lindsay Gruneke (1:01.05) took the 400m dash. Gierke won the 300m low hurdles (45.83), while Sally Gorenz (5:54.54) pulled through for a second place in the 1600m run.
At Batavia, the host Bulldogs won the meet (142.5) followed by Geneva at 136. Glenbard South took third with 75 points. Sycamore finished fifth with 52 points, followed by Rochelle (40), DeKalb (25) and Yorkville (24).
Gierke finished second in the 100m and 200m dashes and the 300m hurdles, while finishing third in the 100m hurdles.
Kaneland’s next frontier is the Ottawa Sectional on Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m. WSC mates DeKalb, Rochelle and Sycamore also join the fray.
