Lady Knights run spectrum of close wins, losses

Softball also smothers Geneva

If the plan was to participate in every type of game before the big battle of regionals takes place, Kaneland softball should be in fine shape.
Granted, they dropped a 10-inning heartbreaker, 5-4 to Glenbard South on Thursday, and got swept 7-6 and 4-3 in a Monday doubleheader in Marengo, but the Lady Knights also eked out a last-inning win vs. Rochelle last Wednesday and beat host Geneva on Monday in five innings, 12-1.
The Lady Knights are 14-6 with a 7-3 mark in the Western Sun Conference.
Mallory Huml (11-3) earned the win vs. Rochelle, allowing just two earned runs.
Maggie Yagen went 2-for-4, and Brianna Hurst’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning brought Jordan Herra home for the winning run.
Kaneland was originally up 2-0 before Rochelle scored three runs in the top of the fifth. Kaneland tied it in the next frame.
Hosting the undefeated-in-conference-play Raiders, the Lady Knights fell behind 2-0 after one inning, before KHS scored four in the bottom of the second.
Vicki Mathieu led off the frame with a double and Lindsay Hansen hit her to third on a grounder.
Huml beat out a grounder to put runners at first and third, and then stole second. Chassidy Mangers’ RBI single made it 2-1, followed by Sara Rose’s three-run blast into the trees in centerfield.
“She hit it about halfway up into the trees. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ball hit that far up there,” coach Dennis Hansen said.
Glenbard South used an error and timely hits to its advantage in the fifth inning to tie matters at 4-4.
Kaneland failed to score even with a runner at third in the eighth inning.
Glenbard South scored in the top of the tenth, and held KHS empty in the bottom of the inning for the win.
“We didn’t make plays in the field at certain points and couldn’t bring runners home. You win together and you lose together. We hit the ball hard and it was two good teams going at it and making plays,” Hansen said.
Against Geneva, the Lady Knights scored three in the first, six in the second, two in the third in and one in the fourth to end the game in five innings,
Huml allowed just one run and fanned four.
Yagen and Jessica Lubic had doubles, while Yagen also joined Sara Rose in the triple category.
Hansen hit her first homer of the campaign, a three-run shot.
Softball steadies for the DeKalb Barbs to come to Maple Park on Thursday, May 8 and travels to Minooka on Saturday, May 10.
