Maple earns football scholarship

Yet another Knight football asset has moved onto the next level and has honors already under his belt.

Kaneland High School class of 2008 member Korey Maple was recruited by Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.

The Kaneville resident is the recipient of a $4,000 Wolf PACT scholarship from the university. Maple is the son of of Mike and Gayle Maple, and plans to major in sports marketing and administration.

The Northern State University Wolves play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which will feature another former Knight, Jody Henningson, who is now with Bemidji State.

NSU coach Chris Boden will have one other athlete from Illinois on his roster: defensive lineman Mike Liedberg, out of Fenton High School in Bensenville.

Maple was a valuable option for Knights coach Tom Fedderly’s offense in 2007 and battled through a shoulder injury to have outstanding games like a 10-catch, 152-yard performance in a  31-28 win over Batavia. Maple also scored the first points of the season against Burlington Central in the 42-29 season opening win on an 18-yard touchdown catch.

‘08 football slate released

Kaneland High School’s road to improve on a 4-5 mark in 2007 begins on Friday night, Aug. 29, in Burlington Central against the Rockets.

That was deemed so after the Illinois High School Association released the full slate of football games for the 2008 season.

As it stands, the Knights will play the same opponents that have occupied their schedule since 2006.

The Knights battle the Rockets at 7 p.m., much like they did during their Class 5A semifinalist run in 2006.

Kaneland then hosts Marmion Academy of Aurora on Friday, Sept. 5, and begins the Western Sun Conference slate on Friday, Sept. 12.

Friday, Sept. 19 sees the Sycamore Spartans come to Maple Park for the Homecoming game, and the Knights travel to road contests the following two weeks: Batavia on Friday, Sept. 26, and Glenbard South on Friday, Oct. 3.

The final third of the regular season has Kaneland host DeKalb on Friday, Oct. 10, go to Geneva on Friday, Oct. 17, and finish the regular season with Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 24, vs. Yorkville.

All games, with the exception of the opener, have a 7:30 p.m. start time.

Kaneland football’s opponents had a combined record of 51-41 after the 2007 season. Geneva, at 11-1, was the most successful opponent while Yorkville, at 2-7, was the worst.

Seven of the Knights’ opponents ended up in playoff action a year ago
